Journal / Willow & Wilde Blog / Wedding Dress Shopping Timeline: When to Start & What to Expect
Not sure when to start shopping for your wedding dress? At Willow & Wilde Bridal in Rossendale, we share our complete timeline — from gathering inspiration to your final fitting.
Finding your dream wedding dress is one of the most exciting parts of planning your big day — but it can also feel overwhelming if you're not sure where to begin. At Willow & Wilde Bridal in Lancashire, we guide brides through this journey, and the number one question I hear is: "When should I start looking?"
Here's your complete wedding dress shopping timeline, so you can enjoy every moment stress-free.
12–18 Months Before Your Wedding: Start Dreaming
You don't need to book an appointment just yet, but this is the perfect time to start gathering inspiration. Create a Pinterest board, save images from Instagram, and pay attention to the silhouettes and styles that catch your eye. Notice whether you're drawn to romantic ballgowns, sleek minimalist cuts, or something with a bit of Bridgerton drama maybe!
What to do:
- Save inspiration images and note what you love about each
- Think about your venue — a barn wedding calls for something different to a grand country house
- Set a realistic budget, including alterations (typically £150–£500)
12 Months Before: Book Your First Appointment
This is the sweet spot for booking your bridal boutique appointment. Designer wedding dresses typically take 4–6 months to order and arrive, so starting here gives you plenty of breathing room.
At Willow & Wilde, we carry designers including Willowby by Watters, Freda Bennet, and Wendy Makin — each with their own beautiful aesthetic, from relaxed boho to classic romance.
What to do:
- Book your appointment at your chosen boutiques (recommend visiting 2–3)
- Bring 2–3 trusted people whose opinion you value — too many voices can be overwhelming!
- Keep an open mind and try styles outside your comfort zone

9 Months Before: Say Yes to the Dress
Once you've found the one, this is the time to place your order. Your boutique will take your measurements and order your dress in the closest size, which will then be tailored to fit you perfectly.
What to do:
- Confirm your order and pay your deposit
- Ask about the expected delivery date and when fittings will begin
- Start thinking about accessories — veils, shoes, and jewellery can take time to source too
3 Months Before: Fittings Begin
Your dress arrives and the magic really begins! Most brides have 2–3 fittings to ensure the perfect fit. Our seamstress will make adjustments gradually, so don't panic if it doesn't look perfect at the first fitting.
What to do:
- Bring the shoes you plan to wear on the day to every fitting
- Be honest — speak up if something doesn't feel right
- Now is the time to choose your accessories and veil too
2-4 Weeks Before: Final Fitting & Collection
Your final fitting should leave you feeling absolutely bridal. After this, your dress will be steamed and carefully packaged ready for collection.
What to do:
- Arrange safe storage at home — hang it in a cool, dry place in its garment bag
- Decide who will be responsible for the dress on the morning of your wedding
- Enjoy this moment — you're nearly there! 💍
Starting Later? Don't Panic.
If your wedding is sooner than 9 months away, all is not lost. Our designers offer rush orders, and we also have sample dresses that can be purchased off the rail and altered quickly. At Willow & Wilde, we'll always do our best to find a solution — just get in touch and we'll talk through your options.
